Making Your Own Travel Fund Coin Bank

Each month I team up with my blogging friends and share a craft project with you made from supplies I have been hoarding collecting.  We call it the Craft Room De-Stash Challenge. This month I dove deep into my craft stash and found a tin piggy bank, some vintage maps and some vinyl letters to create this travel fund coin bank and I think you’ll appreciate how I came up with this project idea.

Last month I was able to check Grand Canyon off my bucket list as my husband and I hit the wide open road and took our family on a trip to Arizona in our Glamper (aka Chateau Bryant). Ever since we returned home my girls haven’t stopped talking about all of the family camping trips they want to take over the summer.

Well, if there is any lesson learned from this trip it was that souvenir shopping can put a big dent into your vacation funds however, I also understand that the kids like it and want to purchase t-shirts, hats, postcards and trinkets to help preserve their happy memories.

I decided now would be the perfect time for my girls to start their own travel fund and it will give them the opportunity to better understand the value of money when it is their money they are spending and not mine. Therefore, I am making each of them a personalized piggy bank that they can fill with loose coins because every penny does add up in the end.

This tin coin bank was picked up at the thrift store for 50 cents and tossed into a drawer to be altered with some decorative papers. I forgot to take a picture of it before I painted it with two coats of my aqua homemade chalky paint but imagine it covered with a brightly colored graphic for a non-profit organization.

After the paint dried I started decorating the bank with some vintage maps which kept in line with the travel theme. I had some scraps leftover from my nautical map tray project and I simply wrapped a strip around the bank and secured it with adhesive.

Then I used twine, lace scraps and some trinkets I picked up on one of my many flea market trips to add some decorative texture to the travel fund coin bank.

The final touch was adding the vinyl letters that were cut using the Silhouette America.{affiliate link} I chose to the words “travel fund” to adhere to the coin bank and I hope my daughter fills it with with lots of coins and ideas for future adventures across the country.

What an attractive project, Denise! Years ago I read a money management book that used this same approach to saving money for just about anything. It’s amazing how quickly your change adds up into significant amounts of money!

What a great idea for the kids! Mine each have piggy banks we got them when on vacation, but they are kind of childish now that they are teenagers. I like the idea of personalizing it for something specific (my girls would save to go to Europe, because I say how much I want to take them one day!)

This is so, so pretty! I love using maps in crafts. I kept all of my old map books “just in case” of crafts or apocalypse, lol.

Great idea! I love the update. It’s never too early to teach the kiddos how to save and spend wisely. Making this coin bank for them just makes it even more fun. Great job using your destash items 🙂 Pinning!
