As one of 20+ bloggers participating in the Thrift Store Décor Challenge this month, I am excited to share how I repurposed this vintage cabinet door and turned it into a chalkboard.
The Challenge Rules:
- Upcycle an item(s) from a thrift store, resale store, or garage sale into a new piece of decor.
- There’s no monthly theme.
- There’s no budget to stick to.

When I found this vintage cabinet door at a local junk shop I instantly knew that I could repurpose it into a chalkboard for my kitchen.
I fell in love with the old wood, ornate hinges and the metal, locking knobs. Taking something old and repurposing, recycling and reusing it into something new is what I love to do with my junkin’ finds.
I have been saving this Martha Stewart Chalkboard Paint Kit for the perfect DIY project.
It worked flawlessly when I made my Rustic Wood Slice Chalkboard and it certainly didn’t disappoint when I used it for this repurposed vintage cabinet door project. This starter kit included the chalkboard paint, the paint brush, stencils and liquid chalk in a dauber. Each of those items can be purchased individually too and I have links below for you to shop.
Supplies Needed

- Cabinet door, preferably old and junky
- Chalkboard Paint
- Paint Brush
- Liquid Erasable Chalk
- Painters Masking Tape
- Chalk
Directions for Dummies
- Wipe down your cabinet door with a damp cloth and let it dry.
- If you don’t have a steady hand, mask off any area that you don’t want covered with chalk paint.
- Brush on one layer of chalkboard paint and let dry for 30 minutes.
- Add a second layer of chalkboard paint and let dry for 24 hours before writing on the chalkboard surface.
- Remove the painters masking tape and season your chalkboard by rubbing it with a piece of regular chalk all over the chalkboard surface.
- You can wipe the chalkboard off with an eraser, dry cloth or damp paper towel.
- At this point you can use regular chalk to freehand a message or use the stencils and liquid erasable chalk dauber to decorate your chalkboard.
This really was a simple project and the best part was finding the vintage cabinet door in back of a junk shop.
And now for more thrifty goodness!
