Budget Friendly $100 Closet Makeover Challenge

Earlier this week I shared my closet makeover preview with you and explained that I was participating in a $100 One Room Makeover Challenge. This one room makeover challenge was thrown down months ago and it was described it as a room makeover done with Champagne Taste on a Kool-Aid Budget.

decluttering and organizing with a master bedroom closet makeover

 The only rule set for this challenge was that we couldn’t spend more than $100 on anything used in the room. That $100 budget included paint, supplies and décor. As you can see, I chose to do a master bedroom closet makeover.

I understand you might possibly think that a closet really isn’t technically a “room” but let me tell you that this is a decent size walk-in closet which ultimately took me two days to purge and organize before I could even start the closet makeover. Here you can see more before pictures but I am forewarning you, it is messy.

Let’s get started with the tour of my fresh, clean and super organized closet. I will tell you that it was easy for me stay under budget because I basically shopped my house and repurposed things I already had prior to the challenge.

Closet Makeover Paint & Supplies $25

After I did a huge purge of clothes, shoes and purses I completely emptied the closet completely and went to the garage to gather my painting supplies. I found a half gallon of white paint and a half gallon of gray paint leftover from previous projects. {$0} I was off to great start spending $0 until I realized I needed new paint brushes. So I headed down to Ace Hardware and picked up two paint brushes. {$25}

First I painted the shelves, clothes bars and door trim white and then I started rolling on the gray paint. Typically whenever I paint a room I do the rolling and my husband does the cutting in but this time it was all on me and he stepped in to help as needed. Let’s just say we are going to be painting the ceiling next weekend as I left my signature paint mark on the ceiling as I do in every room.

Closet Makeover Storage $0

Once I was done painting it was time to put things back in the room with an organized purpose. I stacked two bookshelves for my shoes so they would all be in the same location versus one on each side of the closet as they were in the past. I filled the bookshelves with my dress shoes aka work shoes and filled my vintage suitcase with my flats and flip flops aka casual shoes. I already had the storage bins and baskets on the top shelves so that didn’t cost me a penny either. My husband made my purse rack out of scrap wood and some old hooks. {$0}

Closet Makeover Signage $14

Now don’t get jealous but my husband does the laundry. Yep, he washes, dries, folds AND puts it away. There is no rhyme or reason to his putting away process other than get it hung up in the closet. During this closet makeover I decided to help him learn my new organization system with chalkboard painted door hangers repurposed into clothing dividers. I bought the door hangers and I already had the chalkboard paint. {$3.99}

I was inspired by this quote I found on Pinterest so I made a print myself and hung it on a clipboard that I had from when my daughter was in school. You can download my free printable here{$0}

I also bought a cute wall decal at Hobby Lobby and it was 50% off too. I like the script of this quote and the simplicity of the quote as a gentle daily reminder to just keep being me. {$9.99}

Closet Makeover Lighting $0

Lighting was a huge necessity as I had the standard builder’s grade light aka the boob light because…well….it looks like a boob. You aren’t going to believe this but 10 years ago I picked up 3 chandeliers at the flea market for $40 and this is one of them. (You can see the large chandelier in my dining room here.) It is absolutely beautiful and casts little sparkles all over the room. My closet feels so glamorous now.

Closet Makeover Flooring $40

Although I do have nice hardwood floors throughout my home, I thought a runner would add a nice layer of pattern and color to the room. I found this runner at Target and it literally just fits end to end. {$40}

And there you have my $100 One Room Closet Makeover. I was able to stay on budget and I only spent a whopping $79. No worries, I have a few more items to purchase and spending that last bit of money won’t be a problem.

Please go take a look at what my blogging friends have done as you won’t be disappointed one bit. This is a very talented group of ladies and I am so proud to be part of such an awesome blogging network.

    Denise, let me be the first to congratulate you for your perseverance. I’ve never had vertigo, but I honestly think I would have dropped out of this challenge.
    I love how you used the door hangers as dividers.

    Your light fixture and saying are perfect. 🙂

    • Denise Bryant says:

      Thank you Lisa for throwing down the challenge and coordinating our team efforts. Also, thanks for being patient with my slow progress and posting. I really wanted (no… needed) to get this closet in order and the challenge is just what I needed to get motivated. Vertigo or no Vertigo…I was going to get this done. 🙂

    Wow, painting is hard enough without having to deal with being dizzy every time you move your head. It looks so wonderful, and I love that chandelier and the light it casts. I love the color on the walls that picks up the pretty rug as well.

    I wish I had a walk in closet, but I’m thankful for my very deep reach in closet. And still I cram so much stuff, organization is the key and you’ve done it beautifully!

    • Denise Bryant says:

      Thanks Toni. Despite the Vertigo interfering with my progress, I am quite pleased at how this closet makeover turned out. I plan to keep it super organized forever as I don’t want to go back to the “before”.

    I love that you are able to fit a full length mirror in there. Labeling is so smart!!! I need to try that! Nice job, Denise. I bet it’s nice to find what you need in the morning 🙂

    • Denise Bryant says:

      Janice….I have worn clothes, jewelry and purses I haven’t used in years because I actually know right where things are. I love the mirror too! It was covered up by my huge jewelry box which I moved to another location and it is organized too. 🙂

    My mother has vertigo and she has to stay in bed when she has spells. I think that it is amazing that you accomplished this room having to deal with it. Your closet turned out great!

    • Denise Bryant says:

      Thanks Sherry….it was rough. I depended on my husband a lot and did a lot of laying down too but I am so glad it’s done.

  5. Sarah says:

    I adore your closet makeover!! Right down to the chalkboard hangers and your label above the mirror!!! LOVE it all! How awesome does it feel to organise everything again!! I’ll be over shortly to borrow some of your gorgeous jewellery! 😉

    • Denise Bryant says:

      Being this organized has been awesome. Over the last week I have worn so many things that I haven’t touched in years but I now know exactly where everything is located.

  7. Susie says:

    Super congrats to you! Job well done in every way. Love the decal and that rug!!!! Oh and the light fixture….OK…. it’s safe to say I love it all. Enjoy, my friend. Susie from Chelsea Project

    I am super jealous of your closet!!! I LOL at your signature paint dot on the ceiling…every room in our house has one too!! In our room addition I decided to paint the ceiling the same color as the walls…works out great!! Of course now I have a lot more ceilings to paint in the rest of the house.

  9. Anika says:

    this turned out so pretty!! I love what you did to that space! I cant decide if I love the chandelier more or the decal or the rug! Great job!

  10. christy @theharperhouse says:

    This looks SO good Denise! We just moved this summer and my new closet is much bigger than our old one, but I’m definitely not utilizing it like I should. You’ve given me some great ideas! I bet it feels so nice walking into that gorgeous closet in the morning. Bravo!

  11. Emily says:

    Your closet looks so good! I really love that rug. Thanks for the inspiration, I’ve included a link to this in my post today.
