Decorative Ice Bowl Inspired by Titanic

Happy Monday friends! It’s time for another Movie Monday Challenge and this month we are focusing on movies with a romantic theme. This decorative ice bowl is inspired by the movie Titanic.

I’m sure most people associate Titanic with tragedy and devastation rather than a romantic love story but the 1997 movie is one of my all time favorite love stories.

I honesty have no idea how many times I’ve seen the movie but It’s definitely one that I can watch repeatedly and never grow tired of it. Although it is a short lived love story, Titanic will always be a favorite movie of mine.

I was definitely not short on project ideas with this challenge because there were so many key moments, scenes and decor that got my creative juices flowing, however I opted to pull inspiration from the iceberg that brought an end to Jack and Rose’s love story.

Mother Nature was very helpful with this ice bowl project as she provided the branches and berries. After I did the assembly portion she finished it off by dropping the temperature to a painfully frigid 2 degrees.

Decorative Ice bowl Supplies & Directions

  • 2 bowls, different sizes
  • Berries, branches, flowers, pine cones
  • Tape
  • Water

I used a glass bowl for this project but a plastic bowl or jello mold would work as well. Make sure you use a freezer safe bowl and if you are using a glass bowl make sure you leave some room for expansion so you don’t crack the bowl.

I inserted the small plastic bowl into the center of the larger bowl and layered the berries and branches around the smaller bowl.

Then I slowly added water to the larger bowl which also caused the smaller plastic bowl to float. I added a few pebbles into the plastic bowl to keep it from tipping over.

Once the berries and branches were covered with water I crisscrossed two pieces of tape over the top of the larger bowl making sure to center the smaller bowl and submerge it enough to create a divot large enough to hold a votive candle.

I set it outside for Mother Nature to freeze but you could put it in the freezer too.

After my ice bowl was frozen solid I had to get it out of the glass bowl so I put the glass bowl it in the sink with warm water and added some warm water to the center plastic bowl. I let it melt just enough for the ice to separate and be pulled from the bowls.

I added a votive to the center and used my decorative ice bowl as a centerpiece.

Once dinner was done I put the ice bowl on my front porch because I live in Chicago and I have a feeling we won’t be thawed out until late March.

As I said earlier, each month a group of bloggers participate in a #MovieMondayChallenge, hosted by C’mon Get Crafty! We decide on a topic, genre, or specific movie to use for inspiration and everyone gets free reign to create something wonderful! This month’s challenge was. . . . “Romance! Everyone was allowed to choose their own favorite romantic film for this challenge.

Now let’s see what everyone else was inspired to create for this month’s #MovieMondayChallenge!! If you’d like to join our Facebook group, you can request an invite here.

This is a great idea and would be wonderful with so many different items in the ice, I really love it. Can’t wait to try it but in California I will need to use the freezer for mine! 🙂

This is so pretty and what a fun centerpiece for a Valentine’s dinner. Love that you were able to freeze yours outside. We’ll need the freezer here in central Georgia. Sharing on my Fb page later this week.

I’ve always wanted to do something like this. I think greenery in ice is so pretty. I just wish SoCal wasn’t so warm during the winter so we could line our pathway with these.

Such a beautiful centerpiece idea! I love the ice connection to Titanic. As a fellow Chicagoan, I can pull this off outside too!
